Shift Change with Joan

Yep. That Joan.

It’s 1900h and I’m giving Joan report. I really dislike giving Joan report, because Joan is the sort of nurse who will whine and moan and complain if there are outstanding orders, and there are always things left to do in any emergency department. But she will leave a chock-full commode chair in a patient’s room for the oncoming shift.*

But tonight, for a change, Joan looks solemn and professional, she listens intently, nods at all the right places: she is so clever, she doesn’t even have to write anything down.

And all the time I’m thinking, Who the hell are you trying to kid, Joan?

Or maybe I’m being harsh. Can people change?

___________

*I have chased Joan into the parking lot to get her to empty the commode chair.

Leaving doody pooh for the oncoming shift is not cool except when another patients of yours is coding. Maybe Joan is realizing the folly of her ways… *fingers crossed*
