Sex Squad

Fight the Sperminator!

Brilliant sex education game from the Middlesex-London Health Unit, aimed at teenagers and young adults.

I can’t get over the sperminator’s giant penis shaped arms – I wonder what industrial accident led to that calamity…

I had to click just to see what this was all about…. not normal to see a penis handed man and talk of sex here on your blog….

Can’t say ‘brilliant’ on this one. I wrote about it on Canada Moms Blog actually (http://www.canadamomsblog.com/2010/02/rtp-london-ontario-health-unit-launches-ludicrous-sexual-health-website.html). Many parents aren’t happy about girls getting shot in the face with sperm if they get a question wrong. It’s offensive and condescending to our teenagers. Especially since it’s aimed at 15-24 year olds, who are clearly smarter than this effort.

As a game developer and amateur critic, I find it very poor to the point of being insulting. Its a trivia “game”, but not really. It apes the trappings of a game (the same way it apes the trappings of a comic book to provide a setting for the “game”) but it is just a static content tree. Everything on the screen except a small amount of text is a cynical effort to trick the player into thinking they are having fun. That never, ever, ever works. It is especially disgraceful considering their target audience are some of the the most sophisticated game players.

They obviously had some money to burn. They were willing to take some chances. (See, they even managed to offend someone named “Sugarpants.”) It’s a stupid shame they hired a graphics designer instead of a game designer. Play is how higher animals like humans learn most effectively. But there is no play in this game.
