A Poem for a June Day

While He Lay Dying

While he lay dying
Twilight embraced
The earth, cried frogs and crickets

While he lay dying
Fireflies sparkled in his eyes
Dimming now, world darker:
A cooling wind breathed.
The stars overhead wheeled
Light
He saw and was comforted

While he lay dying
In the morning no pain or want:
The birds sang epiphany
And he was glad
