Okay, another pet peeve, the nurse-as-robot meme.
Via the physician-blogger at Social Media Plus Medicine, who writes, “Japan-based robot maker Kokoro, says that the nurse robot is supposed to give patients a heightened sense of security.” Like all nurses, he adds, “Actroid-F is very realistic, but actually, she is pretty creepy, too – as you can see in the embedded video in which she’s replicating the operators facial expressions and body movements.”
I have no theoretical objection to robotics in health care. However, I think it’s a classic case of expensive toys for upper management boys — who have noticed nursing’s obvious defects, like our penchant for evidence-based practice and a tendency to mouth off, i.e. advocate for our patients. My problem lies with the perception that robots can somehow provide the expert knowledge, skill and care that a nurse can. Apparently, there are people out there who actually believe it.
